"Atelier Therapygarden" MLA WS 2011-2012

The conditions:
The City of Bad Segeberg is a health-resort with strong medical-infrastructure. The inner-city offers a large scale of retail shops, restaurants and cultural facilities. Still every year the Karl-May-Festival attracts more than 100.000 visitors.
The city itself and the whole region wants to develop an image as a place/region of healthcare and recreation to attract more visitors. As one concept they follow the health-park-idea. Related to this concept there are different projects under construction to increase the cities attractiveness regarding health tourism.
The big health player of Bad Segeberg is the Segeberger-Hospitals-Group.
Between the hospital buildings at the western shore of the Big Segeberger Lake there is a park. This park of approximately 1 hectare size will be the subject of this semesters studio. In the course of the next few months, we want to find answers to the following questions:
- What do the clinical specialists of the heart clinic and the psychosomatic clinic need from the park (possibilities/equipement for working with the patients in the park)?
- What is worth to be preserved?
- How could this park be developed as an attractive park and a space for the rehab and therapy of the patients?
We will have the opportunity to interview several doctors and therapists to find the answers and to create an new design for the park on this basis.
The management of the Segeberger-Hospitals-Group is interested in different ideas for a new design of their "Therapy-Garden". The aim of die studio is, to create a design to improve the areas attractiveness for the patients, the inhabitants of Bad Segeberg and the tourists.
